Sporle Primary Academy

Langley was delighted to assist the Diocese of Norwich Education and Academies Trust by resolving the longstanding issues causing leaks through the roof at Sporle Primary Academy.

A comprehensive roof condition survey by Langley revealed that the weak chipboard deck had become warped over time, allowing standing water to accumulate which could potentially cause structural issues. The survey concluded that a full refurbishment was required, along with replacement of the existing structural deck. In addition, the survey found that the roof lights and sun tubes were also allowing water ingress and therefore needed replacing.

As part of a Multi Academy Trust, the Academy had funding in place through the School Condition Allocation (SCA) and appointed Langley for this project as well as other school roof refurbishments in the Diocese. Where schools are given formulaic funding, it is critical that they know where best to spend it, so Langley surveyed all the schools in the Trust in order to prioritise works and enable the Trust to create an Asset Management Plan for roofing works on their stock.

The LHC framework for Flat Roofing and Associated Works (FR2) was selected as the procurement route for this project. FR2 is an OJEU compliant framework available to any project which will use public money in order to complete the works. The service offers design, supply, and installation using a set of rates that the client can draw upon to achieve best value. This service makes procurement easy, simplifying the tender process, delivering best value and ensuring compliance for the client.

Cambridge Flat Roofing, a Langley Approved Contractor, and approved LHC framework installer, stripped back the original roof to the structural timbers, replacing it with new plywood. They carried out the roof refurbishment to a very high standard, within a tight six week schedule. Langley’s design minimised potential fire risks through the installation of Parevapo SBS ADH, a flame-free system, to the relevant areas.

In addition, the refurbished roof now has a tapered insulation scheme to improve rainwater drainage which helps resolve any issue of standing water.

Both the Academy and the Trust were very pleased with the results and they now have peace of mind for the next 25 years thanks to Langley’s independent insurance backed guarantee.
