'Head to Head' finalist for SECBE's Constructing Excellence Awards

Apprenticeship Initiative SECBE Awards 2020 finalist - Waterproof Membrane Installer Apprenticeship

Recognising the need to address the skills gap, the government has pledged to create three million apprenticeships and has worked with employers to define how these apprenticeships should be shaped in order to create valuable and employable skills, under the ‘Trailblazer’ banner.  As the only flat roofing supplier awarded CITB Approved Training Organisation (ATO) status, Langley is well placed to provide the new Waterproof Membranes Installer Standard through the Government’s Trailblazer initiative.

The Trailblazer group is made up of a minimum of 10 employers of various sizes from the industry. They work on defining the skills and knowledge that apprentices should have to maximise their value and potential in the industry. These standards form the basis of what is learnt during the apprenticeship, to ensure consistency and provide a guide for meeting the required level of knowledge. Being employer-led, Trailblazer apprenticeships focus on equipping the participants with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for them to be successful and ultimately benefit themselves, their employer and the sector.

In more detail

Langley was one of six price submissions given to ESFA (Education and Skills Funding Agency) to allocate a funding band for the delivery of the Waterproof Membranes Installer Standard and out of the six was the successful training provider to deliver the standard.

The 18-24 month course, delivered by Langley, comprises 14 blocks covering Reinforced Bituminous Membrane (RBM), single ply and liquid systems. Each block includes a combination of both classroom workshops and practical sessions, to ensure that the apprentices gain both a theoretical understanding of the trade as well as the ‘real-life’ practical skills required to complete work safely and to a high standard. In line with the focus on applied skills, the qualification is predominantly assessed through observation on the job which also minimises any interruption to the employers’ and employees’ working day.

The course is not limited by age, open to ages 16-60 years old, each individual must be in full-time employment and able to attend weekly theoretical training held at Dudley College’s Advanced TECC in Leytonstone.

The value of this initiative is further enhanced and made attractive for many employers as the apprenticeship will be almost completely funded. Non-apprenticeship levy payers can expect the apprentices to have 95% of the apprenticeship funded.

The course has been developed through the dedicated trainers at Langley (with over 65 years of combined experience within the roofing industry). It encompasses Building Regulations, health and safety, installation processes of the three practices and many other components. Industry associations including the NFRC (National Federation of Roofing Contractors) and the LRWA (Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Systems) have shown their support by the attendance of key decision-makers from the associations at Advanced TECC.

Langley itself offers a programme of extensive training to its employees and also to their approved network of contractors that install the systems supplied. The Trailblazer has allowed Langley to offer training to third parties, predominately construction contractors enabling access to other organisations and individuals.

Recent feedback from an apprentice:

"I have been in the roofing trade for around a year. Although I have developed basic knowledge and skills from shadowing colleagues on-site, the Waterproof Membrane Installer Apprenticeship Standard will give me the in-depth detail and first-hand experience I need to complete work on-site more safely and to a higher standard.

"The first week of the apprenticeship was both engaging and relatable. It will assist me with expanding my knowledge of the industry from a theoretical and practical perspective. This week has been a useful balance between the workshop sessions and practical elements on the rigs."

Highlights:

  • Langley is the only roofing systems supplier in the UK to deliver this new Waterproof Membrane Installer Standard
  • 19 apprentices have enrolled in four months with a further 10 apprentices later in the year
  • Collaborative relationship with internationally established college in construction learning and development; Dudley College
